How do you feel about your writing—and how does writing make you feel—when it’s going well?
For me, it feels like a delicious gathering of power, an accumulation of kinetic energy. A little like this, or this:
Conversely, why and when does your writing stutter out?
What does it feel like?
What have you done to try and help?
These aren’t idle questions. They’re at the center of my coaching and writing catalyst work in The Partnership, and I’d love to hear your answers. Comment below or send me an email and think out loud to me!
Right now my attempts at writing feel like slamming an inadequate spoon into over-frozen ice cream and watching the spoon bend a little.
One thing I do to help, when I have the luxury, is to put down the spoon and stop trying.
So this month I’m engaging wholeheartedly with client work and continuing education—I’m taking two in-depth courses on editing memoir—but am otherwise trying to be elsewhere. To spend minimal time at the computer, to keep up only with the biggest of the news, which is bludgeoning at every level, every day. To sit and stare at the light on the water. To travel to beautiful mountains and be with relatives who bring me joy.
Every life, and every creative cycle, needs rest and nourishment. How privileged I am to be able to step away.
May you be able to step away when you need to. May we come back centered and ready.
And if you want a partner by your side to help you get from your own ice cream brain to arcs of powerful light—and build personal, energizing strategies that help you do it again next time—I’m your gal.
